Learn about resilience from Eastern NC community members in their own words.
In this episode, Donnell and Jenny talk to Seth Saeugling and Vichi Jagannathan. Seth and Vichi are the cofounders of the Rural Opportunities Institute, which supports local agencies and organizations in understanding their role in creating healing from trauma. They also help organizations design and pilot new policies and practices that lead to healing and reimagine policies that may have caused trauma and harm. In this conversation, we dive into the impact of trauma and the ways in which we can all pursue pathways to healing.
Are you a mission-driven leader in the nonprofit sector with more passion than answers? Vichi Jagannathan was one such leader, and in episode #231 of Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, she shares what it means to let your community take the lead and provide the answers you need as the nonprofit leader. Vichi explains how building on design thinking ideas from across the country brought clarity to the challenges she faced in a rural and under-resourced community. She discusses the biggest challenges she had to overcome in running a small nonprofit, and the solutions she found when building staff, volunteers, and a board of directors.
In 2017, Vichi co-founded Rural Opportunity Institute (ROI). ROI builds the capacity of rural communities to support people’s healing from generational trauma to achieve health, safety, connection, and self-determination. Based in rural Eastern North Carolina, ROI has grown from a small, grassroots effort to an influential organization that impacts more than 20,000 people in 15 states. ROI’s innovative approach has captured the interest of national state funders including New Profit and the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust.
In this episode, Tobi has a fascinating discussion on engaging communities in social change with Vichi Jagannathan. Vichi shares her personal journey and experiences in working towards social change in rural communities, specifically in eastern North Carolina.
Vichi Jagannathan is the Co-Founder of the Rural Opportunity Institute (ROI). She started her career as a high school science teacher in North Carolina, before spending two years expanding Microsoft’s TEALS computer science education program into California. Then she worked with the design firm IDEO to develop “Real Talk,” a mobile sex education app with over 10,000 downloads.
When it comes to philanthropy a lot of the focus and attention goes to foundations, organizations, and donors based in large cities. Much of the US, and indeed the world, still live in rural areas and have unique philanthropic issues and concerns. For this reason, we have chosen to focus on rural philanthropy for our upcoming sixth season of Open Door Philanthropy, the highly-rated philanthropy podcast hosted by Unfunded List Founder Dave Moss (available wherever you get your podcasts).
