Coming up with an amazing idea, finding supportive partners, and building an effective curriculum can be very challenging by itself, but throw in a shoestring budget and limited time and resources, and you’re set up for a huge undertaking.
Community engagement is key to creating a strong and effective organization. By engaging with the community, you can get feedback and input on important decisions, and you can also build relationships with community members.
RLI is the first social accelerator program in the country that is based in a rural community, focuses on public agencies (instead of startups), and centers on healing trauma.

Here at ROI, we pride ourselves on being knowledgeable about the needs of our community. Within our organization, we do extensive research to learn what’s working and not working in our trainings and make corrections as we learn.
No matter what kind of community you work in, you may have preconceived ideas about what it would be like to work in a place completely different than your own. If you live and work in an urban setting, imagine for a minute what it might be like to live in a rural setting.
Imagine you did a favor for a trusted friend. You are happy to do the favor, even if it means you have to go a little out of your way. However, imagine that your friend never acknowledged or thanked you for helping them out.
Words can carry immense meaning. When we choose our words carefully, we can clearly convey complex ideas, describe deep emotions and express our needs effectively. But the way we use a word—or misuse it—can affect the accuracy of our communication.
